About the Safety Management Research Centre

The Safety Management Research Centre(CMRC) at ChinaUniversity of Mining & Technology-Beijing (CUMTB) started its business in 2002. Responding to the rapid growth of scientific research on safety management at CUMTB, the University set up a research group called Safety Management and Accident Prevention Research Group in 2006, which was later developed into the current Safety Management Research Centre. The Centre has been receiving quite a strong support by the safety program at CUMTB.

The safety program at CUMTB was awarded the right to offer PhD degrees in 1986, the first of its kind in China. Since becoming the first national-level key program in 2001, the program has been taking a lead in the country. In 2005, the program became one of the core programs for the State Key Lab of Coal Resources and Safe Mining, and the National Engineering Centre for Coal Mine Gas Control, also founded in 2005, also relies on the support from the safety program at CUMTB. In 2006, the program was admitted into the Innovation Platform for the “985 Project”, an outstanding university construction project launched by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Now CMRC is committed to the scientific research and consulting business on safety management. Most of the scientists at CMRC are holders of PhD and master degrees, they have strong education backgrounds from renowned domestic or overseas universities, such as Tsinghua University, China University of Mining and Technology, China University of Geosciences, West Virginia University, Virginia Tech, Michigan Technological University, Monash University, University of New South Wales and Curtin University of Technology. Some of them have senior positions in the State Experts Group on Work Safety, China Occupational Safety and Health Association, Chinese National Education Steering Committee on Safety Engineering, Chinese Association of Labor Protection Science and Technology for Coal Industry, Beijing Expert Panel on Emergency Response, and Expert Accreditation Committee of Asia Association of Risk and Crisis Management etc. Fifteen of them are Certified Safety Engineers or Certified Senior Risk Managers.

CMRC is proud of its industrial experiences for safety. It has successfully finished more than fifty research and consulting projects, including projects funded by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Australia-China Special Fund for S&T Cooperation and by famous companies in China. CMRC extensively collaborates with big group companies in China, such as Shanxi Coking Coal Group, Henan Coal and Chemical Industry Co, Yankuang Group, Zaozhuang Coal Mining Group, Zibo Coal Mining Group in Shandong and Shuangyashan Coal Group in Heilongjiang Provinces.

Funded by “211 Project”, “985 Project” in China, and by the Large Grant Project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Centre developed an Internet-based quantitative analysis system for safety climate, which was evidenced by the expert group organized by the Chinese National Coal Association in 2009. The system is one of the key devices in the State Key Laboratory at CUMTB. It consists of unique key boards, an electronic controller, video camera, database, and software system. The system provides important supports to the scientific research at SMRC and outside organizations such as MonashUniversity. And it is also an effective diagnostic tool for safety management systems of industries.
The Centre is dedicated to the scientific research and consulting on the improvement of safety culture, safety management system, and safety behavior modification for industries. Now SMRC has achieved high records on the funding budget of consulting projects in the fields of safety management in China
